You must remember not to login to your internet banking account from a public computer. Do when you have your own laptop with you or through your desktop. Common computers in libraries or cyber cafes are not safe for logging, as these are crowded places, where it is more likely that your password can be seen or traced by others.

Even if you have to login from a public computer, ensure that you clear the browsing as well as the cache history of that computer, in addition to deleting all temporary files from that computer. Additionally, never allow the web browser of public computers to remember your password or ID.

  1. Change your password frequently

By changing your password regularly, you can avoid hacking of your online banking account and thus can practice safe online banking. Frequent password changes reduce the possibility of someone tracing or hacking your account password. Although, the first time when you will login to your online banking account, you will have to use the password that the bank provides you, later on you can change your online banking password. Additionally, you must always keep your password confidential.

  1. Do not share your financial details with anyone

You must not give your banking or financial details to anyone. For your information, let me tell you that no bank will ever ask you for your confidential banking information over email or phone. So, in case you get an email or a phone call from the bank requesting your bank details, do not reveal your login information. You must use your online banking account’s login ID and password only on the bank’s official login page and not anywhere else. In order to make sure that the website is secure, check if there is ‘https://’ in the URL, while you log into your bank account.

  1. Always use licensed anti-virus software

In order to protect your desktop from new viruses, you must make sure that you always employ licensed anti-virus software. You may get various pirated versions of this anti-virus software free of cost, but they cannot protect your computer from viruses that are widespread in the online world.

So, ensure that you update your anti-virus software from time to time in order to protect your confidential banking information.

  1. Check your accounts regularly

Whenever you make an online transaction, check your account. Verify whether the right amount of money has been deducted from your savings or checking account. And, if you find any discrepancies in your account or amount, then you must immediately inform the bank.

  1. Enter the URL of your internet banking

Whenever you want to use internet banking, make sure that you enter the URL of your bank in the browser’s address bar and then only type in your bank account’s ID and password. It is safe to enter your URL rather than clicking on the links that are given in emails. This is because many fraudsters send emails with links of fraudulent websites, which are exactly designed like the original website of the bank.

And, when you type your login details on such kind of websites, these fraudsters can access your account details and steal your money.  Therefore, in order to practice safe online banking, you must check if the bank’s URL consists of ‘https://’ and if it is the authentic website of the bank, then only enter your account’s login details on the website.
